I’m a big fan of the trilogy model. It’s like a model of self-awareness. The first level of awareness is what we call our “fearful self”. The first level is our “self-consciousness”. The second level is our “reflective self” and the third level is our “self-aware”.
I’m a tad obsessive with this model. I always have to remind myself that I’ve been a writer for the last twenty-four hours, or that I can’t do a task that I have to do for school, so I may as well not bother.
The three level self-awareness model is a great analogy for understanding the difference between a person with self-awareness and a person without self-awareness. People with self-awareness believe that they can take control of their actions and actions and their lives. So they know that they can make choices that affect their lives. People without self-awareness believe that they can’t take control of their actions or make decisions that affect their lives.
People without self-awareness think their life is so boring they just want to watch TV. That is, until they watch something that makes them think all the choices they make affect their lives in some important way. Then they get mad. People with self-awareness understand that their life is interesting and complex and they can make choices that will affect their lives in a positive way.
We call this the “cognitive dissonance.” When we make a bad decision, we feel bad about it, but we also feel that we’re not being a bad person any longer. If we don’t, then we can’t make the decision to make the decision. With a self-aware person, they can look back and make a decision differently, because they don’t feel so bad about it.
